Volunteer opportunity to stop new nuclear weapons

 In Nuclear Weapons

Peace Action West and the nuclear disarmament movement had a great success in 2007 when Congress cut all of the funding for the Reliable Replacement Warhead program. In 2008, we must continue our pressure on Congress to maintain that success and start moving toward more proactive steps to eliminate nuclear weapons.  Rep. Ellen Tauscher (D-Walnut Creek) sits on a key committee, and while skeptical about RRW,  still accepts some misguided arguments that it could be a potential vehicle for nuclear disarmament. Our Nuclear Weapons Campaign Organizer Jahsiah Ault is calling for volunteers to help send a clear message to Rep. Tauscher that we don’t want any more new nukes:

The Bush administration is trying to build what they call the Reliable Replacement Warhead, or the RRW. The RRW program is a plan to rebuild our nuclear arsenal to make “more usable” nuclear weapons. In 1968, the US signed the Non-proliferation Treaty, along with 189 other countries, stating that we will not make any more nuclear weapons. To go ahead with the RRW program would be breaking the treaty and sending a very dangerous message to the rest of the world. Ellen Tauscher, the chair of the Strategic Forces Subcommittee of Armed Services still believes the RRW  should be left on the table. It is now imperative that we let her know that the American people do not want our tax dollars going to fund a new generation of nuclear weapons.

Our current goal is to stop the RRW program.

I have set out to collect 10,000 petitions from Rep. Tauscher’s constituents, to pressure her to turn around and oppose the RRW program.

But I am going to need your help to accomplish this goal.

I am looking for people who want to get active and volunteer their time to help us reach our goal. We are going to be setting up tables in Walnut Creek, Livermore and other various locations in Ellen Tauscher’s district, having volunteers get people to sign the petition. We are also going to have people on the streets with clipboards getting petitions signed.

If you are interested in volunteering please contact me at jault@peaceactionwest.org or (510) 849-2272 ext. 140.
