We hate to say we told you so …..

539wFor the last few years we’ve argued that the sweetheart civilian nuclear technology deal between the U.S. and India would invite a similar deal between China and Pakistan. So this weekend’s announcement of just such a deal comes as no surprise. In both cases "civilian" nuclear material may be able to be diverted to the respective South Asian countries’ nuclear weapons programs. Then there’s Russia and Iran’s nuclear technology collaboration. This is "energy diplomacy" at its incoherent, nuclear-proliferation-prone worst. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. The Associated Press reports ….

"….enhanced cooperation with China will likely help ease Pakistan’s resentment of a recent deal allowing U.S. businesses to sell nuclear fuel, technology and reactors to neighboring archrival India.

U.S. officials, including Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher, who held talks in Islamabad on Saturday, have rejected Pakistani calls for equal treatment — usually with reference to Pakistan’s past history of leaking sensitive nuclear secrets.

The Pakistan-China deal however comes as Russia is helping to build a nuclear plant in Iran, highlighting the growing nuclear foothold each of the big three rivals have in three strategic countries stretching from the Persian Gulf to South Asia."

Another thing that bothers me about the US/India deal is that its main purpose is to provide energy to outsource more US jobs to India.
