Peace Action mourns the passing of former U.S. Representative and former Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums.

“Ron Dellums was a courageous and effective voice in the fight for peace and justice,” said Peace Action Executive Director Jon Rainwater. “From his historic fight against South Africa’s apartheid to his championing of nuclear disarmament and reducing militarism at home and abroad, Ron Dellums leaves behind a legacy of action on behalf of those that seek a more peaceful world. Peace Action extends our deepest condolences to the Dellums family and all those who knew this champion of peace and justice.”

Dellums, a founder of the Congressional Black Caucus, consistently earned a perfect score of 100% on Peace Action’s Congressional Scorecard. As the first African American chairman of the U.S. House Armed Services Committee, Dellums was a strong critic of unnecessary military programs like the B-2 bomber and “Star Wars” missile defense, was a leader in opposition to U.S. wars, and a fierce advocate for strong and effective diplomacy.
