Clinton and Russian Foreign Minister Stress Need for Arms Control
Today Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met, with discussions about nuclear weapons reductions and arms control at the top of their agenda. There were a lot of positive statements on START and nuclear weapons reductions. You can watch their press conference above.
In an interview with NPR, Clinton says this about the Obama administration's approach to arms control:
function of our foreign policy. As you remember, Michele, there was a
great deal of confusion and infighting and ideological position taking
regarding arms control and nonproliferation in the last administration.
We're committed to both, and we are going to be working with the
Russians on the start treaty and the nonproliferation treaty and other
matters of great concern to us.
And from an AP article:
"We intend to have an agreement by the end of the year," she told a news conference after two hours of talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Clinton said she expects President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in coming weeks to instruct negotiators from both capitals to complete an arms treaty to replace the one that went into effect in 1991 and is due to expire on Dec. 31.
