Jonathan Schell, Presente!
The peace and disarmament community has lost one of our most eloquent champions, author and activist Jonathan Schell, who died earlier this week from cancer.
I had the distinct pleasure of working closely with Jonathan for a few years, from 1999 to 2001 when I served as director of Project Abolition, a nuclear disarmament coalition on whose Steering Committee Jonathan served (Peace Action and about a half dozen other groups were members). Jonathan was wonderful to work with, very serious, committed and very generous with his time. In informal, social settings I found him to be a delightful conversationalist and overall a very nice, kind, gentle man. A great loss. Here is a remembrance and a sample of his writing for The Nation magazine.
