Take Action – Support the Hibakusha Petition to Abolish Nuclear Weapons!

 In Nuclear Weapons

Here’s a petition I hope you will sign in a hurry.  It is a petition campaign to abolish nuclear weapons started by Hibakusha (survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki).

What’s the rush?  Well, for one thing, the average age of the Hibakusha is 80.  To quote their statement in outlining their intent they write:  “It is our strong desire to achieve a nuclear weapon-free world in our lifetime, so that succeeding generations of people will not see hell on earth ever again.”

Please sign their petition to rid our world of nuclear weapons.

The week before last I was at New Jersey Peace Action’s annual dinner along side Shigeko Sasamori, a Hibakusha and Hiroshima Maiden, and the adopted daughter of a founder of SANE (now Peace Action) Norman Cousins.  Thirteen at the time of the bombing of Hiroshima, she was less than a mile away from where the nuclear bomb exploded. She has since dedicated her life to campaigning for peace and “against all nuclear things.”

Over the years, I have had the great honor of meeting and getting to know many of the Hibakusha.  Their love for humanity runs deep.  Their passion for nuclear abolition has spanned over 70 years now.  If now, they seem a bit impatient, who can blame them?

Please sign their petition to rid our world of nuclear terror.

Peace Action is pressing President Obama to become the first sitting U.S. President to travel to Hiroshima.  Not as a symbol, but rather a messenger, carrying concrete proposals to move the world closer to the goal of nuclear disarmament.

And while he’s there, he should meet with Hibakusha.

We, members and supporters of Peace Action are working hard right now to cut funding for plans to ‘modernize’ the U.S, nuclear arsenal.  It’s a massive and massively wasteful trillion dollar Nuclear Weapons Forever program and it’s important we defund it.

As important as it is, it won’t be enough to free us from the threat of mass destruction.  We need a global demand to abolish nuclear weapons.  We, the global movement for nuclear abolition, need to be at work pressing the leaders of nuclear armed nations everywhere they go.  We need a global alliance of all those who love our planet, love peace and love our lives.  We can build that.

Please sign the Hibakusha petition for nuclear abolition.  Your signature is important, but don’t stop there.  Forward the petition to your friends and family and use social media to get more people on board.

Humbly for Peace,

Kevin Martin
President
Peace Action
