Send real progressives to Congress
One of our greatest challenges is a Congress full of politicians who scare easily when it comes to issues of war and peace. Whether it’s out of fear or lack of motivation, they just go along with the status quo. Every day we work to light a fire under these reluctant members of Congress, but every so often we get the chance to truly change the face of Congress.
That’s why I am so proud to introduce you to our first pro-peace challengers of 2010. Marcy Winograd and Bill Hedrick are true progressive leaders with the backbone to fight for a better, peaceful foreign policy to make us all safer. Click here to support these stellar candidates.
Marcy Winograd is running a grassroots primary campaign against hawkish Democrat Jane Harman (CA-36). Harman has faced intense criticism for her support of the Iraq war and Bush’s warrantless wiretapping program. After jumping in at the last minute, Winograd was able to take 38% of the vote in 2006. She has hit the ground running this year with a campaign slogan that makes her priorities clear: “Jobs, Not Wars.” Marcy Winograd needs your help before the June 8th primary to turn out the vote and send a message to Jane Harman and the Democratic Party. Teacher and school board president Bill Hedrick is running against rubber-stamp Republican Ken Calvert in California’s 44th district. Hedrick knows the toll war takes on families; his son and daughter-in-law are serving their 3rd deployments in Iraq, and his other son and daughter-in-law are Iraq veterans. He wants our tax dollars invested in peaceful solutions abroad and jobs and healthcare at home. He is not afraid to stand up and say that we are on the wrong path in Afghanistan, and he will work with us on moving our vision of a world free of nuclear weapons. By coming within three points of Calvert in 2008 with little outside support, Hedrick has shown that a proud progressive can win in this district. Click here to donate to Bill Hedrick.
I have had the privilege of spending time with both Marcy Winograd and Bill Hedrick. Their knowledge and passionate commitment to peace and justice give me inspiration for our future work to change the way things are done in Congress. They can bring that same inspiration to the House, but only with your help. Please donate today.
